Brief History of School of Midwifery Aboh Mbaise

In quest of the solution for the health care needs of the community of the then Mbaise Division, the country council built a clinic in the premises of the Ministry of Education in 1950. The clinic did not solve the health needs of the community, thus the community on their own built the Aboh Mbaise General Hospital in 1959. The management of the hospital was given to the expatriate Catholic Mission until the Nigerian Civil War broke out which lasted from 1966 to 1970.
The school was established in 1964 and was managed by the expatriate Reverend Sisters. They started training grade two midwives but later stopped in 1978. In the same year, they gave admission to registered nurses to be trained as post basic student midwives. This cadre of students training stopped in 2003. In March 2003, they recruited O’level students to be trained as basic midwives until date.

The admission of fresh students was based on Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) specifications.
The management of the school was taken over by the Imo State government in 1976 under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Ministry of Health, Imo State. In 2008, the school lost its provisional accreditation. In 2020, the NMCN team ably-led by the Registrar, Alhaji Faruk Umar Abubakar visited the school for resource verification.

The team left with observations, advice and suggestions which motivated His Excellency, Dist. Senator Hope Uzodinma (Onwa Oyoko) to recover the lost accreditation of fourteen years old as a practical demonstration of his 3-R Mantra of Shared Prosperity (Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery) in 2022 with a quota admission of fifty (50) students.
Hence, in 2023, the school admitted a total of 54 students under the leadership of then Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Prosper Success-Ohayagha, who worked in synergy with the Director of Nursing Services, Imo State, Barr. Nurse Ucheamaka Mary Oranusi and the Principal, Mrs. Linda C. Mgbechi. In 2024, a total of 94 students were admitted. This year 2025, another batch of students were admitted to increase the number of students in the institution.

The process of admission has been through a joint advertisement with School of Midwifery, Awo-omamma, Imo state. Thereafter, a joint common entrance follows and then oral interview. This year’s admission marks the end of phase of sale of forms by the institutions as mandated by NMCN.
We are glad to note that the second accreditation visit of the school by the NMCN team may not have been successful without the efforts of the immediate past Hon. Commissioner for Health, Secondary and Tertiary Health Care Management, Prof. Chukwuemeka Michael Ubaka and the current Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mrs. Chioma Vivian Egu.
